Sage critical security update stops older versions from working

Businesses running older versions of Sage 50 Accounts will be affected by a security update that Sage will be applying from 30th September 2022.

Anyone running the affected older versions will see the following message, the implication being that the versions will soon stop working completely.

Urgent action required

Software updates help keep your data secure and deliver the latest performance improvements.

From 30 September 2022, we’re making security improvements which means you need to install v26.3 or above, to continue to access your software.

We recommend you install the latest version as soon as possible.

Which versions are affected?

The issue affects older versions of Sage 50 Accounts v20 through to 26.2
Customers on v26.2 can upgrade to v26.3 for free. Contact Sage support for a link.

Can I upgrade to a newer version?

Most customers on these older versions will be on perpetual licences i.e. no option to upgrade. As Sage are no longer supplying perpetual licences customers will need to purchase a new Sage subscription to Sage 50 Cloud Accounts. Don’t be put off by the name “Cloud” this is still the same desktop application but it does have some cloud based features and integrations with other cloud services.

What if the new version isn’t supported on my old Windows server?

Sage 50 Cloud Accounts is supported on Windows Server 2012 and newer, and on desktop operating systems Windows 8.1 and newer

Before replacing your server take a look at Sage hosting. For many small businesses hosting Sage will work out cheaper than even the electricity required to run your own server.

What is the issue that is affecting these older versions of Sage 50 Accounts?

Versions v20 through to 26.2 connect to Sage’s online servers using a security protocol called TLS 1.0 which has been deprecated and no longer supported by most online tech companies like Google, Microsoft and Apple. TLS is used to encrypt data as it passes over the internet. It stands for Transport Layer Security. TLS 1.0 and TLS1.1 are both considered insecure as they are easy to hack.

TLS version 1.2 was released in 2008 and is still supported.

Sage v20 was released in 2014. Make of that what you will.
